The Kidneys

The kidneys are the body's natural filtration system. Every day, they filter about 50 gallons of blood to remove waste, regulate fluid, and balance essential minerals.

Main Functions

  • Filtering Blood: Removes excess water, toxins, and waste products (urea and creatinine) from the blood to create urine.
  • Balancing Fluids & Minerals: Regulates essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium to keep your body's chemistry stable.
  • Producing Hormones: Produces erythropoietin (EPO) which helps create red blood cells, and renin which helps regulate blood pressure.

Transplant Process

Evaluation & Listing

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergo extensive testing. If approved, they are placed on the national transplant waiting list.

Living or Deceased Donor

Kidneys can come from deceased donors or from living donors. Living donation is unique because a healthy person can donate one kidney safely.

Surgery & Recovery

Patients usually undergo a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. The new kidney is placed in the lower abdomen and hooked up to the blood supply.

Lifelong Care

Recipients take immunosuppressant medication to prevent rejection. With proper care, a transplanted kidney can function beautifully for many years.
